Homedir move WS18

We are upgrading our fileservers with new hardware. Compared to the old hardware the new hardware offers about twice the speed and harddisk space. There will be some service restrictions during the move.

Status

During the Move-Weekend we will be publishing the status of the move and any further information here:

The move is done. There is chance that some computers has not got the new fileserver config. Dont switch these computers off, mail the computer name to the RBG.

All computer are rebooted or should working correctly. Due to the fast move, the announced reboot at sunday evening is canceled. The regulary weekly reboot in the night saturday/sunday will be done.

The computer remote-homeumzug is no longer active.

Process

• Begin Saturday(Nov. 10th) Morning - End sometime Sunday Evening.
• The move happens first letter wise and take up to 2 hours for each letter. E.g. if your home is /home/e/example your first letter is e.
• While a letter is moving the affected file system will be in read-only state. That means you can still access your files via ssh but you can not change them. A graphical login will throw errors.
• Which letters have moved alreay and which are currently on the move will be published above.
• We will provide a special remote machine under remote-homeumzug.cip.ifi.lmu.de for the duration of the move. As soon as a letter is moved the affected home filesystem will be mounted there and can then be used normaly. All logins located in still unmoved areas will produce an error message upon login (“Homeverzeichnis nicht gefunden”)(“Homedir not found”).
• We try to modify the services WWW and SVN during the operation but can not fully guaranty the availability of the services.
• All workplace PCs will be rebooted at the end of the move to ensure mounting of the new fileservers.
• We will provide a machine where both the old and the new filesystems are available for some time after the move. You can copy files to the new system there.

Workplace- and Remotemachines

Until the reboot of the Workplacemachines at the end of the move only the old homes are available. That means that after a letter has moved the home will be read-only. Using the home ( logging in ) will therefore cause errors.

SVN and www/cgi.cip.ifi.lmu.de

We will try the intergrate the changes successively during normal opearations. If this is not possible the affected servers will be rebooted when needed. It is unavoidable that during the move of a letter the services are available only read-only for this letter.

Information about the machine with the old and new homedirs

The machine studhome.cip.ifi.lmu.de is accessible via ssh. This machine is to be used solely for ssh/scp and to copy file from the old homes to the new ones. This machine will be rebootet Sunday evening to switch your mounted directory under /home from old to new. Irrespective of this change you can still access your old home under /oldhome and your new one under /newhome. /newhome is already available there since we started to synchronize your homes onto the new fileservers before the finale move.
