11-17-2023 06:00 | Use of "New Outlook" violates our use guidelines and law

8-19-2022 15:00 | New TLS policies and features for mail and other services
The institute has decided to implement a more strict usage policy for current TLS versions for mail and other services. The policy up till now was to allow unsafe connections if one side did not support a secure connection.
Now all services will be successively switched to a stricter policy. This means that connections to or from us will only be accepted with TLSv1.2 and v1.3. Web connections will still accept http but will immediately reroute to https with secure TLS.
Users are advised to check if the software they use supports and uses secure TLS versions. There could be problems with the use of intermediary Software like mandatory proxies or ISP mail servers.
A further implemented change will be the usage of SPF and DKIM signing for mail. SPF is already active on most of our mail domains. The implementation of DKIM will be completed till the end of autumn. These measures can cause problems with mail forwarding.

On July 22. 2021 (7/22/21) between 7:30 and 12:00 the LRZ will be swapping out some more switches in the Oettingenstr. 67. The PCs can become unreachable at any time during the maintenance window as well es lose access to fileservers and other services. SLURM jobs will most likiely crash. This will also impact the CIP IMAP Servers. These will be unreachable for some time. Spam tagging will be affected likewise.
Because the swaps also affect the building uplink the whole Oettingenstr. 67 will be unreachable for some time. This will lead to problems in Luna and Deneb. Homes, SLURM etc.

4-19-2021 12:00 | Aftermath of the big power fail at Oettingenstr.
Ausfälle an den IT Diensten entstanden.

11-2-2020 06:00 | 2.nd Update - Opening of CIP-Pools
We dont plan to reopen our CIP pools normally during WS 2020/21.
The reason for this decision is the configuration of the AC system for our rooms. At this time the AC system use only outside air and hence the temperature in the rooms will follow the outside temperature. This is bad for our IT equipment and a bad working condition.
We will restrict the AC system for our rooms and will reevaluate the situation in spring. Without an unrestricted AC system we cant reopen the rooms.

- only small numbers of users
- you have to register on entering
- you have to use a face mask
- you have to keep a safe distance
All other rooms will stay closed.
7-29-2020 06:00 | Gitlab Update sends Confirmation emails for registered email addresses
We will apply an update to gitlab on THU 30. July 2020 evening. This update will send Confirmation emails for registered email addresses in gitlab to some users. The reason for this is a bug in an older version of gitlab which allowed users to circumvent the confirmation of their email addresses until the bug was fixed. The current update sends the aforementioned confirmation emails to all users who could have used this bug. You need to confirm all email adresses registerd in your gitlab account to regain access to it.

6-15-2020 06:00 | New servers for CIP webmail
We will switch webmail.cip to new servers On monday the 22. of June 2020. The version of the webmail software Roundcube stays the same. We will copy user profiles (addressbooks and other settings) to the new server on Fr. the 19. of June 20202
The old server will still be running for a few days after the 22. because it can take some DNS servers a few days to realize the move. For about 99% of all users the move should be done in under 10min. Please check profile changes a few days after the 22. and redo them if necessary just to be on the safe side.
It can take a few minutes for the new servers to be available during the move on Mo.

5-24-2018 10:00 | Neue RBG Website
The RBG has a new website.
There are several reasons for that:
-
The old website was no longer up-to-date. Especially for mobile devices with smaller screens.
-
It was past time to unclutter and restructure the contents.
-
The DSGVO which is now in force.
Sadly the last reason is a hard deadline. Which accounts for the contents not being as complete as we would have liked them to be. We will change this in the weeks to come.
4-1-2018 10:00 | Discontinuation of mail forwarding for @cip.ifi.lmu.de and @stud.ifi.lmu.de email addresses
From 1.10.2018 onward all forwarding of emails for recipient domains @cip.ifi.lmu.de and @stud.ifi.lmu.de ( and the corresponding long format informatik.uni-muenchen.de) to external mail providers will be discontinued.
All email sent to these addresses will then only be delivered to the local mailbox residing on the mailsystem of the IfI. The emails can be read there. The only exceptions will be forwards within the IfI and CIS.
Reason for this decision
There are tree reasons for this decision.
Fewer and fewer (external) mail providers accept forwards and a rising number have announced such actions for the near future. By accepting only emails sent directly from the owner of the originating mail domain they aim to achieve two results. Firstly this should improve the proof of authenticity of emails and secondly it should reduce SPAM.
Forwarding emails negatively impacts the reputation of our mail system. Mail providers use this reputation (e.g. through blacklists) to determine if SPAM might originate from our mail system. This can even lead to a complete rejection of all mail from our system. The reason for the negative impact is that all our anti SPAM meassures notwithstanding a small amount of SPAM still gets forwarded.
External mail providers sometimes reject mails from our system because of reasons like unknown recipient, mailbox full, technical issues etc. But a lot of our services are dependant on a functioning email reception.
What does this mean for me?
This change is not as bad as it first appears to be. Most good mail clients have a feature which transparently integrates mail from different mail accounts into one virtual mailbox. Just google for your mail client and terms like “unified inbox”, “unified folder” or “global inbox”.
